WaveFront Guided LASIK

What Is WaveFront Guided LASIK?

WaveFront Guided CustomVue LASIK is a variation of the LASIK procedure. It is a technology developed by AMO/VISX that provides far superior results when compared to conventional LASIK. CustomVue allows the laser treatment customized to each patient´s individual optics.

How Does It Work?

The technology is a three step process. The first step is measuring the unique imperfections in your eye. This is done using a VISX WaveFront WaveScan. The WaveScan works by sending pulses of light, known as wavefronts, into your eye and measuring the output back onto sensors in the WaveScan. The WaveScan compiles this data and creates a set of CustomVue maps of your eye showing the higher order aberrations and refractive errors.

The next step involves programming the treatment. The CustomVue maps generated from the WaveScan are used to program a customized treatment for each eye. This is done well in advance of the actual LASIK treatment. The programmed treatments are transferred to the VISX STAR S4 IR laser using a USB flash drive.

The final step involves the laser treatment. CustomVue LASIK is performed in the same manor as conventional LASIK. In both cases either the eye is prepped, or a flap is created, laser treatment is applied and the flap is replaced or the eye is bandaged with a contact lens. However, with CustomVue the actual laser treatment pattern follows the customized specifications programmed for each individual eye using the WaveFront guided maps.

What are the results?

During the clinical studies for VISX CustomVue the following results were reported one year after the CustomVue LASIK procedure

  • 100% of patients could pass a driving test without contacts or glasses
  • 98% of patients could see 20/20 or better
  • 70% of patients could see better then 20/20

Dr. Haddad's Laser Eye Institute was one of the first LASIK surgeons in Michigan to use CustomVue LASIK technology, and is currently Michigan’s most experienced CustomVue LASIK surgeon. Over 90% of his patients elect to have the CustomVue LASIK procedure.

In April 2010 Dr. Haddad presented a course to his colleagues at the ASCRS (American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons) Symposium entitled Improving Results With CustomVue LASIK and is considered one of the industries most experienced CustomVue LASIK surgeon.
