During daily activities our eyes are constantly changing focus, from reading the newspaper to watching television we are constantly shifting or focus from objects in our near vision to objects more far away.

Traditionally when a patient undergoes Cataract surgery their natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens (also called an IOL). Up until recently only one type of IOL was offered, a monofocal IOL or standard IOL. These standard IOLs allowed patients to see objects in the distance clearly, but still required reading glasses and possibly bifocals to see objects in the near and close range.
