What is a cataract?

A Cataract is caused when the natural lens becomes cloudy and interferes with the vision. There are many types of cataract, the most common is the one associated with aging, in fact 50% of people over age 60 have some cataract formation.

What is a monofocal lens

A monofocal lens, also called an IOL, is what is used to replaced the damaged lens inside your eye. The lens is a mono-lens giving you the ability to only focus on distance objects after the lens is inserted. For patients wishing to have both great near and distance vision, they should consider a Multifocal Lens.

What is a multifocal lens

A multifocal lens such as the ReSTOR lens gives patients the ability to view objects both in the distance and up close after cataract removal, without needing reading glasses. With more seniors wishing to lead active lives the multifocal lenses are becoming more and more popular. During your appointment with Dr. Haddad he will determine if a multifocal lens meets your needs and recommend either a monofocal or multifocal lens.

How do i know if i have cataracts?

Cataracts can be difficult for an individual to detect because the onset is not sudden. Vision will slowly decreases over time. If you are currently being seen by an eye care professional and they detect that you may have cataracts they will recommend you visit a specialist such as us.

How are they treated?

Cataracts are using a 2step procedure. First Dr. Haddad uses an ultrasonic instrument to break up and gently remove the existing cloudy (cataract) lens in the eye. Next Dr. Haddad replaces the removed lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), the lens is rotated into place and the soft arms gently unfold to hold it into place.

What is the recovery time?

Like most procedures this depends on the overall health of your eye. For most patients vision improves almost immediately after the procedure and continues to improve for the next few weeks after the procedure

Are there any risks with cataracts?

Yes, with any surgical procedure there are risks. The biggest risk is the chance of infection, however fewer then 1% of procedures ever get an infection and most are treated with medications. Our surgical staff will discuss the complete list of risks and outcomes during your appointment.

What is the cost for cataract surgery

For most patients, cataract surgery is covered either partially or fully by their insurance company.

Is there any pain?

There is very little pain associated with cataract remove. During the procedure a topical anesthetic is used to minimize any pain.
